President calls for acceleration of International Stadium construction - 1st August 2009

The President has advised authorities to accelerate the construction of the International Stadium at Diyagama in Homagama. The construction work of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium is currently underway in Diyagama, Homagama. The President made an observation tour of the stadium this morning. The stadium will conform to international standards with facilities for all sports. It will also consist of a gym for the sportsmen and women. This modern stadium will be built in a natural environment amidst jak, mango, coconut and kithul trees. Green zones will also be setup in the premises. There would be capacity for more than three thousand viewers in the rugger field while five thousand seats will be provided in the athletics field. The construction is being carried out by the seventh engineering corps of the army. It will be the only international stadium in Sri Lanka with the latest facilities. The first phase of the construction will be completed in the next three months. The President also supervised the construction work of the Matara-Colombo expressway at Kottawa. Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga, Major General Palitha Fernando, Commanding Officer of the Seventh Engineering Corps Lt. Col. M.P.K. Jayawardena accompanied the President.
