Tamil Tiger 'command hub taken'

Addthis

Sri Lanka Army TankThe Sri Lankan army has captured what it says is the main operations centre of Tamil Tiger rebels in the north. Army spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara said soldiers had found detailed maps of the army's deployments and rebel positions in an empty building.

There has been no comment from the Tamil Tigers, who have suffered a series of reverses in recent months.
Meanwhile the UN has criticised the Tigers for not allowing safe passage to its workers in areas they control.

The UN issued "its strongest possible protest" to the Tamil Tigers "for their refusal to allow UN national staff and dependents" to return after visiting rebel-held areas on Friday to deliver "urgent food and emergency supplies" to displace people.

The rebels are now confined to their sole remaining stronghold in the north - the area surrounding the town of Mullaitivu.
On Wednesday the military said it had designated a safe zone for civilians as it pushes ahead with its offensive in the Mullaitivu area.
