President Mahinda Rajapaksa made an official visit to Kilinocchchi, the fallen LTTE administrative capital today (16). This is the first visit by a Head of State to this part of Sri Lanka in nearly three decades.
He was briefed about the defence situation and future operations by the Army officers.
The President made this goodwill visit during the traditional Sinhala and Hindu New Year period to meet with the troops stationed there as well as IDPs and other civilians. President also participated the New Year celebration with the troops.
Killinochchi was considered the headquarters and administrative centre of the separatist LTTE, until it was taken over by the security forces on January 02 this year, in the current operations to eliminate terrorism from this country.
Secretary Defence Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff(CDS) Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Police Chief Inspector General Jayantha Wickramarathne were also present at the occassion.
