Addthis

President Mahinda RajapaksaThe ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance led by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, recorded a landslide victory in Saturday's Western Provincial Council election by winning 68 out of a total of 104 seats.

In the final results, Rajapaksa's United People's Freedom Alliance recorded over 60 percent of votes. In the three districts, UPFA polled a total of 1,506,115 which amounted to 64.73 percent.

The main opposition United National Party has managed to win 30 seats and polled 688,253 votes which amounted to 29.58 percent of the total votes polled.

In the Western Provincial Council election, the splintered People’s Liberation Front (JVP), which faced the election alone managed to win 3 seats, whereas Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 2 and Democratic Unity Alliance obtained 1 seat.

Out of the total of 3.8 million eligible voters, a total of 2,415, 879 voters polled in the election.

Commenting today's election victory Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said the election was held in a peaceful and calm atmosphere yesterday.

No any serious incidents or violations had been reported throughout the Election Day except for some minor incidents. Results of electorates of the Colombo district had been released registering several victories for the opposition UNP, but the margins of victories have not been much impressive even in the heart of Colombo, the capital city.

"The electorate understood the vision of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa as fairer and more just Sri Lanka, and they embraced it. They clearly responded to the call of the President for a united Sri Lanka and the electorate was highly inspired. The President believed in himself in wiping out terrorism, and the people also believed in him," the Minister said.

"The President’s strong will, courage and patriotism, paid at last and it was not only the rural voter, but also the urban voter that showed solidarity with the President. By all means this is a genuine victory achieved by way of a free and fair general election. This general political background will easily integrate into the President’s determination of establishing a lasting legacy of democracy, development and civilization for Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and other ethnic communities living in our motherland," Minister Yapa said.
