Ampara to get Seismic Monitoring Unit

Following the series of minor tremors experienced in the Ampara District last week, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has decided to set up new Seismic Monitoring Unit in the District on Wednesday.

GSMB Chairman Dr. N. P. Wijayananda said that at currently there were three earth tremor monitoring stations and they were at Pallekele, Hakmana and Mahakanadarawa.
"There were five minor tremors recorded in our three centres on the 2.3 Richter scale up to Saturday," he said.
Dr. Wijayananda said that equipments for the new unit in Ampara would be dispatched today (03). The GSMB Chief said that the minor tremors were reported from Damana, Wadinagala, Devalahinda, Galkanda, Kulegama, Galapamula and Kethsirigama, in the Ampara District.
According to villagers the walls of their houses showed cracks following the tremors, but no one was harmed.
